RACE 1 – SOUTHERN CENTRAL ENGINEERING PACE – 1758 metres

MISS MODERN RUBY (S Harris), which had shown gate speed, raced three wide from the start before working forward to take up the position outside the leader leaving the 1400 metres.

FAIRY RAINBOW (M Diebert) was caught racing three wide from the start before being restrained to take up a position on the marker pegs at the rear of the field leaving the 1400 metres.

Driver D Kenna pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 168(1)(a) for careless driving, in that leaving the 600 metres when shifting YOUROCKANNA out, he did not provide sufficient room and his runner contacted the sulky wheel of PAULIE WALNUTS (G Forrest) causing it to suffer a flat tyre, placing it at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account D Kenna’s guilty plea, his relative good driving record and the particular circumstances of the incident. Driver D Kenna had his license to drive in races suspended for a period of 7 days to commence at midnight the 6th of January.

HUNZA VALLEY (B Jones) was held up for clear running for the majority of the home straight.

RUBY BYE BYE (B Jones) hung-in slightly and locked wheels momentarily with BROBENAH BOY near the 400 metres.

SPORTS STREET (G Forrest) hung-in badly near the 1400 metres, as a result ANGLE DEE JAY (M Diebert) was tightened, forced inside a number of marker pegs and had to be checked, given the mare’s record connections were advised that it would be placed on its last chance to race truly.

ARTHURS BIG LOU (M Diebert) tired over the concluding stages for which a warning was issued.

When questioned regarding the tactics adopted and performance of LIFESABALL, which was driven out at the start to lead and tired over the concluding stages, Driver B Thompson stated that he had been instructed by the Trainer to attempt to lead to take advantage of the inside front row draw going into the first turn and then take cover. He added that he was able to do this and was happy to take cover when ROCKY BRANACH improved to his outside. B Thompson added that the pace of the race in the early and middle stages was likely to have had an effect on the gelding being able to finish the race off at this stage of its career. He further added that he was somewhat disappointed with LIFESABALL’s effort over the concluding stages as they were reasonably confident of a forward showing after the gelding had trialled to their satisfaction recently when leading. Connections were advised the gelding would be required to perform a re-qualifying trial.

LUCKIE (B Trembath) will be placed back in the draw for future mobile start races.

A post-race swab sample was taken from the winner ROCKY BRANACH.
